This is one of our oldest groups held at the Goldsmiths Community Centre. Some of the clients have been attending for 8 years and there is a family atmosphere in the group. As the name suggests there has been a broad range of activities taking place during the year; pottery exercise, art, painting, cooking and quizzes to name a few. In many ways the activity part of the group has helped to strengthen friendships as members have encouraged one another. Some clients have found fine motor skills challenging, for others a hearing or sight impairment has required an inventive solution to enable them to fully enjoy the activity.
Tuesday Tai Chi
The focus on a Tuesday morning at Rowan Court, in Sydenham, has been gentle calming exercises with attention to detail.
Wednesday Falls Prevention Group
Our most popular group during 2009-2010! Members have enjoyed the exercises and the added bonus of being able to attend the Luncheon Club at the ‘Grove Centre’ following the session. Please click here to find out more.
Wednesday Craft Group
The Craft group starts at 1.15pm and finishes at 3.15pm. However all members who come by transport like to take advantage of the Luncheon Club at the Grove Centre before the group starts as they wouldn’t be able to get there on their own. We make sure they arrive at 12pm to offer them this extra service. The members are collected from their homes from 10am. For many of our members it’s the only outing each week. The group is aimed at people who feel confident managing independently and safely indoors but who lack the mobility to hop on a bus. The interests of the group are varied.
Thursday Men’s Group
The group was established in September 2007 as we found that older men are often hard to reach in terms of needing advice and support and men requested their own group rather than groups frequented largely by women! This group meets at ‘St George’s Church’ in Perry Vale and the number of referrals has steadily grown throughout the year. The men are extremely supportive of each other. Most members rely on the minibus service to be able to attend.
Thursday Hydrotherapy
The year started very promisingly with Wendy from Eltham Leisure Centre continuing to provide a class at a time suitable for our members to join in. Alas in February a fire at the pool has resulted in temporary closure of the hydro pool and with no public hydrotherapy pool available in Lewisham the group patiently awaits the reopening of the class in September 2010.
Goldsmiths Friday Lunch Group
Set up in January 2007 jointly with the Sage Educational Trust as part of the ‘Ageing Well Project’, homely nutritious meals are the order of the day as requested by the older people. For some members it has been the only home cooked meal they have eaten all week.
